There is a flimsy plastic collar piece that holds the gear wheels in position. It had broken up and appears to have jammed the gears intermittently causing them to squeal on the turning motor shaft. Looks like a pretty poor = cheap design decision (quelle surprise). Fingers crossed for those who have one just out of guarantee like us!
