I'm not usually one for writing reviews with photos but the reviews on this were so varied that I wanted to give a bit more detail for anyone else similarly unsure.
I've purchased this to put hot food in for lunch at work. My usual lunchtime means that the pot will be made up some five hours before I eat. Some reviews say it holds heat well. Others say that it doesn't.
Thermos' own FAQs say: "When we say a product “keeps hot for 24 hours” (for example), we’re measuring how long it takes for freshly boiled water (starting at 95°C) to drop below 60°C inside the sealed container."
I'll talk through the pictures in turn. It advertises 9 hours hot. That's what I'm looking for. It also says 470ml.
I measured out 470g of cold water in. It comes just to the rim below the thread in the top.
I pre-heated the unit by pouring boiling water in, putting the lid on, and leaving it for five minutes. My kitchen is 18.5C (so if you're storing yours in a freezing rucksack your mileage may vary).
I then poured out the pre-heated water and put boiling water in from the kettle. The picture shows the temperature is 95.6C.
470g of hot water is a slight overfill compared to cold. I tipped some out and found that 450 is a better volume for it (453 showing on scale and second image of fill so you can make your own judgement).
I then put the lid on and left it for five hours. The result was 71.6C. Perfectly hot enough for food.
That was 5 hours. I was curious how it would do over the 9 hours advertised. Look now at the images with the thermometer angled.
This time I put 451g of boiling water in (with 5 minute pre-heat as before) and that water was 94.3C.
9 hours later the thermometer reads 61.6C - again perfectly hot enough for eating from.
At this point I took off the labels. The label on the bottom took of some of the paint job! That surprised me. It's only cosmetic so it's not a problem but I don't think the finish is as robust as my Chilly bottle that I use too.
The lid and stopper did get warm and I did worry that the heat was going to dissipate too fast but it didn't seem to.
I'm yet to use this in anger. I'm aware that filling it up less than 'full' may mean the temperature drops a touch faster. I am, however, reasonably hopeful that it will do the job I need it to. Time will tell.
It certainly appears to hold its heat well though.
