Step 2: Get to know your slow cooker
No matter the brand or style of your slow cooker, it’s capable of working wonders for your weeknight dinners. Some come with fancy digital timers and keep-warm settings, while others are as simple as plug in and go – both do the job beautifully.
The joy of slow-cooking is that it does that hard work for you! Just pop your ingredients in, switch it on, and let it gently bubble away while you get on with your day. It’s perfect for busy weeknights, lazy Sundays, or when you want to come home to a house that smells like you’ve been cooking all day. Plus, it’s energy-efficient, easy to clean, and brilliant for batch-cooking. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll wonder how you ever managed without one.
Step 3: Take stock of your ingredients and write your meal plan
Before you start cooking, it’s worth taking a moment to see what you’ve got in your cupboards and fridge. Having a clear idea of your ingredients makes meal planning so much easier, and it stops you reaching for the takeaway menu on busy evenings.
With our Slow Cooker book on your kitchen shelf, you’ll have plenty of inspiration to rustle up rich and hearty slimming-friendly meals. You can plan a week’s worth of dinners, mix and match recipes, and even batch-cook ahead for when your schedule’s hectic. Whatever it is you’re cooking up, knowing what you’ve got and what you need means your slow cooker can work its magic without any faff.
Step 4: Make the most of our slow cooker hints and tips
In addition to plenty of tasty recipes, Slow Cooker is filled with handy hints and tips to help your trusty kitchen gadget reach its full potential. Things like…
Keep an eye on your liquid levels. The liquid in your slow cooker has nowhere to escape, so too much can boil your ingredients instead of letting them cook gently. We’ve tested our recipes carefully, but every slow cooker is different, so check yours the first few times you use it.
Leave enough space for your meal to simmer. As a rule, fill your pot no more than two-thirds full, or halfway if your dish has more liquid. An overflowing pot can cause leaks and uneven cooking.
